But in most cases, there are often many budget friendly material options to achieving your garden addition. And, I'll just be really honest here, a lot of times it ends up looking (and lasting) like a thrown together project. Even with cheaper materials it's really important to consider the longevity of the material as well as the way you build it to make it worth your while. Because, in the end you're time will be worth way more than the materials and you want to spend your time in a meaningful way so that you can enjoy your beautiful project for a good long while. So, in the spirit of sharing some artful uses of unusual garden materials, I decided to put together this blog post to focus on a few that I think are worth considering. I've got 6 Budget Material ideas for you - let's get to it. ~ post continues, click "read more" ~ 🌿 July in the Prescott Garden
Your Monthly Garden Keeping Summary from The Whiskey Porch As July rolls in, Prescott settles into the heart of summer — a season defined by tending, timing, and watchfulness. With monsoons often arriving early, this month is less about big projects and more about daily presence: adjusting irrigation, watching for pests, and harvesting what your garden has to offer. This week we are thinking about and celebrating local places, local-ness, the beautiful scenery we are lucky to have, and picnics. Let me explain! Today is International Picnic Day, not that we need a special holiday to make a picnic worthy of celebrating. And since we want to share more time with the special people in our lives, I think we should all spend the day outside with our family and friends enjoying a picnic. There's nothing that sounds bad about that, right? Consider that aside from some well-earned downtime, there are health and general wellness benefits too!!

Your Monthly Garden Keeping Summary from The Whiskey Porch As the high desert moves into early summer, June in Prescott brings high temperatures, intense sun, and the beginnings of the monsoon season. It's a month focused on fine-tuning water habits and staying alert to pest activity — especially for new seedlings and recent additions to the garden. A Natural Approach to Home & Garden Design |

And just like that, it just all settles into this easy, warm glow.
We are celebrating the Fall Equinox in the northern hemisphere today. Far from being just the end of summer, autumn always feels like a new beginning to me. |

Life starts all over again ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald |
Everything is luminous with color and vibrancy. The sun lower in the sky but still warm and gentle. The bustle of the kiddos heading back to school and the birds enjoying the bounty of the summer season before everything lays down for a nice, quiet rest. The freshness in the air in the evening and early morning brings new energy.
Always my favorite and most invigorating change of season - I hope this day is a lovely one for you too.
Take a moment to smell the change in the air and listen to the birds chatter.
Happy fall equinox to you,

This is a fun little bit of news to share.
The local garden club here in Prescott is Alta Vista Garden Club, and they have been here in town since 1951.
One of the many activities they do is recognizing local gardens each season of the year, which they call "Garden of Merit".
And for autumn this year, my gardens here at Juniper Hill Cottage were selected!
This is a group of very skilled and capable gardeners who care deeply about the local community and they work hard to provide value and resources to this area.
I am grateful for this honor and hope you've seen the advertising around town recently as well as in the local paper.

National Simplicity Day is today, every year on the 12th of July.
This is sort of a special "holiday" for us here at The Whiskey Porch because it's at the core of what we are all about. After all, our tag line is "cultivating contentment & possibility in a smaller, simpler & more beautiful lifestyle."
And, now more than ever, it just feels like we are all seeking refuge and inspiration to lift our spirits as we recover from this wild insanity of the last few years and then there's more to come with another divisive election season.
So it goes without saying, that finding pleasure and calm in simple ideas is something many of us are striving for now.

The celebration originated in honor of Henry David Thoreau, who lived in Concord, Massachusetts from July 12, 1817 to 1862.

Just a quick post here today. Thinking about Earth Day which comes up in a few days.
I applied organic fertilizer in my kitchen garden and landscape this weekend. It's a tiny ... stinky. In a good way, at least I think so. My husband asked me if something died in the garden, haha.
After I realized that I could still smell the soil and the "organic-ness" of my garden, even at the neighbors' house, the next couple days, it got me thinking.

Why do some folks think it smells bad, while others (at least me) find it settling and wonderful?
I'm not sure I have the answer to that, but I really enjoyed this recent article from The New York Times about The Health Benefits of Getting in the Dirt. And I wanted to share it with you.
Let me know what you think! Maybe go make a mud pie if you don't keep a garden 🤠...
Happy Earth Day!
