Gardens of Prescott, July 2021

This is a new summer monthly feature for us.  #gardensofprescott

So, for the month of July, just to kick things off, I've decided to start with my own garden here at Juniper Hill Cottage - in downtown Prescott.

A beautiful homegrown garden with a view

Although this is a standard sized downtown lot, we've packed a lot into the space including meandering walks, covered porches, patios and gazebos, tons of shade, and even a completely custom built kitchen garden where I am growing over 100 different herbs, almost entirely from seed.

One of the biggest highlights that make it feel luxurious is the creation of many small garden "rooms" and extensive integration with the massive old trees we are fortunate to have (13 of them at last count) and some outstanding views.

~ post continues below, click read more ~

The garden essentially takes up the entire lot (minus a large driveway that's sort of incorporated to the space.  We started from a completely overgrown disaster with zero hardscape and have totally transformed it over 10 years.  While we have used a couple of contractors to do pavers and prune big trees, 95% of the work and 100% of the design is ours.  Nothing you see here existed 10 years ago, except of course the huge old trees.

And honestly, while any gardener knows that your garden is never really "done", we still have a few major hardscape elements left to finish.  Hopefully most of that will be completed this fall and winter, so that we can settle into the puttering part of the garden cycle.

I often share images and weekly goings-on about my garden, as a resource or just for inspiration, but today I went around and captured a view shots just for this feature to share.  Check it out:

I will be sharing lots more about the before and after, details of how the garden has evolved and of course lots about all of our homemade raised beds, gazebos, fences and shade structures, etc.  Stay tuned!

Want to submit your garden for a feature?

In the summer season, June thru August, we will be doing a monthly feature of a local garden here in Prescott, Arizona.  #gardensofprescott

Ever wondered what's hidden behind that wonderful little cottage with the gate?  Maybe it's a secret garden!  Whether it's an ornamental yard, a little veggie patch, or an elaborate old garden, we want to know!  Homegrown gardens are our "thing" - inspired, created, and cared for by the homeowner (not by a landscape company).  Of course, that certainly doesn't mean that you never get help - we get it.

If you're interested in having your garden considered for a future feature, please reach out and tell us about it!

Since this is a new feature, we currently have a slot open for August 2021.   And then, of course, for next summer and it's never to early to plan these things!

Thanks for reading and I hope your garden is also sanctuary for you and the birds.

Let me know what you think in the comments below!  I actually read them and respond.

Peace & contentment,
~Miriam
