JUNIPER HILL COTTAGE
1924 Craftsman Bungalow

Video: Whiskey Porch version 2.0

100 years ago, our little bungalow was graced with a small covered front porch, facing due west out over the valley and the downtown.

We know this because although that porch was enclosed a very long while ago (we think in the 60's or so) we were lucky enough to receive 2 photos of the original porch taken in the 40's.

The original whiskey porch circa 1940's. Notice the two elaborate windows. Only one survives today.
In fact, that is the only historical information we have on how the home looked originally.

views to die for

The evening view from that porch was as iconic as it gets here in Prescott, with Thumb Butte silhouetted against the sunset, and Granite Mountain just north of that for a little extra treat.

Temporary porch for sittin'

So the first thing we did when we bought the house was throw up a temporary little deck, just under the eaves of the old porch (now enclosed), in order to enjoy that inspiring view every evening.   You have took hard but there it is wrapping around the old Juniper tree just big enough for 2 adirondacks.

And now, as part of the renovation of the home, we have opened up that original porch again, along with adding a couple of feet to the north corner just to square of the porch.

This is now The Whiskey Porch - version 2.0.

Back to it's former glory, but even better than it was.

Here's a short video that shows all of the work involved in undoing the unfortunate 60's-muddle and crafting a stunning bungalow porch.  Enjoy!

Porches are one of the most alluring elements of Craftsman bungalows and if you're lucky enough to have one you'll know exactly what I mean.  I wrote a blog post exploring the front porch concept that you might enjoy.
