Prescott Garden keeping - July Edition

🌿 July in the Prescott Garden
Your Monthly Garden Keeping Summary from The Whiskey Porch

As July rolls in, Prescott settles into the heart of summer — a season defined by tending, timing, and watchfulness. With monsoons often arriving early, this month is less about big projects and more about daily presence: adjusting irrigation, watching for pests, and harvesting what your garden has to offer.

Yep - those blooms are *actually* that crazy intense color. No editing!

🌼 Seasonal Highlights
  • Tend and harvest: With many summer veggies beginning to produce, it’s time to protect fruits and beans from birds and critters, and enjoy the bounty .
  • Monsoon adjustments: Monitor your drip irrigation — rain sensors help, but newer plantings may still need supplemental hand-watering after storms.

📝 Full Checklist is on our Substack.  The Prescott Garden Keeping Journal – July Edition includes:
  • 🌱 Plants & Planting
  • 💦 Water
  • 🦌 Critters
  • ✂️ Maintenance
  • 📝 Planning & Reflecting

A Quick note about my shift to substack

I’m moving all of my seasonal content — including these monthly garden checklists and my more personal reflections on design, simple living, and the art of living well — over to Substack.

It’s a quieter, more intentional space where I can share practical tips, stories, and behind-the-scenes moments — all without ads or social media noise.  And, we can foster a more personal conversation there which feels more like sharing from the porch than broadcasting into the algorithm void.

It’s still completely FREE to follow along, and I’d love to welcome you there.

I enjoy putting these guidelines together every month, and find that it forces me to really think through the various things I typically do.

Although I know some of these lists get pretty long, I've learned that in my own gardens those areas that have been established for a long while (8+ years) there's really very little to do on a weekly or monthly basis.  At least until late fall.  That's because I use almost exclusively perennials that are water wise and have finally gotten the right plants in the right locations where they tend to thrive.

It takes time.  Be patient.  Have fun with it!

Until next time, happy 4th of July!

I always love reading the monthly to-do list. Sometimes it helps me learn of things that need doing. Sometimes it makes me feel smug about practicing a newly-learned skill. Sometimes it re-invigorates a flagging intention.

Just last week I ordered winter veggie seeds including cabbage, cauliflower, (cool season) spinach, and beets. I just have to dig up the potato patch to make room to plant them. Will it be "new potatoes or no potatoes?"

Hello Stephen. Nice to hear from you. I'm so glad you enjoy the monthly reminders. I must admit that I have a list of garden maybe-to-do's that I maintain carefully but realize I will likely not be checking off any time soon... wishful thinking. Good luck with your fall planting!
