10 Simple & Inspiring Ways to Celebrate the Spring Equinox

3/19/2025

Happy Spring!  Tomorrow is the Spring Equinox,  also known as the Vernal Equinox.  That beautiful time of year when day and night are nearly equal, gently shifting us toward brighter, warmer days.

Historically, cultures worldwide have celebrated this moment as a period of renewal, growth, and reconnection to the earth. Here in the Southwest, indigenous communities traditionally mark this season with ceremonies honoring the land's fertility and the rejuvenation of life.

For me, the Spring Equinox symbolizes fresh starts and the quiet joy of observing nature awakening around us. It’s the ideal moment to pause, reflect, and thoughtfully welcome the new season into our homes and gardens.

Here are TEN beautifully simple ideas for celebrating the arrival of spring here in Prescott.

1.  Sunrise Tea

Begin the day slowly by enjoying a quiet cup of herbal tea at sunrise. I sometimes pick fresh herbs like mint, chamomile, or lemon balm straight from the garden, toss them straight into my cup of hot water and enjoy.  Of course, my garden is barely waking up right now, so I will probably just use some store bought herbs.

2. Garden Wake-Up

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your garden. Try planting native wildflower seeds, tidying your garden beds, or trimming winter debris. These small efforts bring significant renewal to outdoor spaces.

3. Bring the Outdoors in

Create simple arrangements of freshly cut blooms or budding branches from your garden to place around your home. It’s a charming way to infuse your indoor spaces with spring’s energy.

For me, I've got daffodils coming to life now, and still have Hellebores doing their thing.    A small bouquet in an antique vase on my desk is real treat.

4. Color refresh

Celebrate the season by giving outdoor furniture, flowerpots, or your front door a cheerful refresh with colors inspired by Prescott’s natural beauty. A touch of color goes a long way in brightening your space and mood.

5. Equinox porch gathering

Invite friends or neighbors for an easy-going gathering on your porch or patio. Lanterns, cozy blankets, and seasonal treats set a welcoming scene and highlight the joy of simple outdoor living.  Later in the season we do this daily, and right around sunset.  But tomorrow maybe it's a late afternoon gathering instead to capture the warmth.

6. Fresh Seasonal Meal

Prepare meals that highlight fresh spring ingredients like asparagus, leafy greens, and garden herbs. Enjoying these dishes outdoors makes the most of the longer, warmer evenings.

I just made the most amazing Pozole Rojo last night.  Well, actually it took about 5 hours to put it together but I enjoy the process.

I made a ridiculously huge amount because, as everyone knows, it's even better the next day or two.  Tomorrow I will pull it out and we'll enjoy an amazing meal to honor the coming of Spring in our little corner of the Arizona mountains.

In Sweden, where I'm from, the Spring Equinox has traditionally been celebrated with festive meals featuring seasonal delicacies such as gravad lax (cured salmon), new potatoes with dill, pickled herring, and fresh asparagus. Families gather to enjoy these foods, symbolizing abundance and renewal, and to embrace the returning warmth and sunlight after the long winter.

7.  A meal outdoors

If you can break away midday while the sun is high and warm, maybe plan an Equinox picnic.  Looking for the perfect spot to celebrate outdoors? Check out some of our favorite local picnic spots.

8. try a little sketch

Spend a quiet moment sketching or water coloring the scenes you observe around you. Artistic skill isn’t necessary—just appreciation for nature’s beauty and the relaxing rhythm of the season.  Or, start a simple journal noting daily observations of seasonal changes in your garden and surroundings. This mindful practice deepens your appreciation of nature’s gentle transitions.

I always have aspirations of learning how to sketch with colored pencils, but so far haven't really made the leap...

9. outdoor space refresh

Refresh patios or porches with updated cushions, colorful pottery, or new decorative accents. Small touches quickly make outdoor spaces feel welcoming and renewed.

I'm thinking about getting new fabric to re-cover my patio cushions and pillows - tomorrow is a great day to get that project going maybe.

10. plant a flower pot

Plant a colorful container arrangement by your front entrance using vibrant blooms and fragrant herbs. This cheerful welcome brightens your doorstep.  Plants are returning to garden centers around town now, so give the season a jump start with this small and easy project.

Celebrating the Spring Equinox is about savoring simplicity and reconnecting with the natural rhythms of the season.
